From technical institute to university

Mombasa Institute of Muslim Education (1948)

The institution traces its origins to 1948 as the Mombasa Institute of Muslim Education (MIOME), established to offer technical training on the Kenyan coast.

Mombasa Technical Institute (1966)

In 1966 the institution was reconstituted as the Mombasa Technical Institute (MTI), expanding technical and vocational training for the growing region.

Mombasa Polytechnic (1972)

In 1972 it was elevated to a national polytechnic — the Mombasa Polytechnic (MP) — offering diploma and certificate programmes across engineering and applied sciences.

Mombasa Polytechnic University College (2007)

In 2007 it was gazetted as the Mombasa Polytechnic University College (MPUC), a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, marking the path to full university status.

Technical University of Mombasa (2013)

In 2013 the institution was awarded a Charter as the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) — a fully-fledged public university and the first technical university on the Kenyan coast.
